We started this blog as a way to chronicle our adventures and travels throughout Asia while living in the Philippines. We have since moved back to the US, but will continue to write about our adventures and experiences. We will include a few pictures and our viewpoints on what we see and do. We hope you enjoy them also. Enjoy, The Blooms

2011-04 Taipei Bike Ride
We stopped in Guanshui for a donut, which was very light with a minimal coating of sugar. They were warm from the fryer and went down very good. There is a very large temple built into the side of the hill, and a lot of people were visiting this morning. It is a long holiday weekend in Taiwan as Children's day is Monday and Tomb Sweeping Day, which is similar to Memorial Day in the US as it is a time to remember the ancestors and visit the cemeteries.
We ended up getting to Danshui about 2 hours after we started. Since it was near lunchtime, we headed down a street filled with multiple vendors and stared eating our way down the street. Kenny was picking and choosing some of the best and most well known foods along the street for us to eat. Our first stop was for breaded, deep fried cuttlefish, which is a large type of squid. What made this delicious was the powdered spices they sprinkled over the hot cut up pieces. I had plum spice along with a touch of curry powder.
Midway down the street was a temple with some wonderful stone carvings on the walls and intricate pottery or china statues on the roof. There were 3 monks in front of the temple soliciting donations. Each one was about 6" taller than the previous, ranging from 5 to 6 foot tall in a perfect stair step. I started to take a photo because I thought it was interesting, and as soon as I raised my camera, they raised their arms to cover their face. I first thought it was just part of their routine, but then realized they did not want their photos taken. I erased the photos and went to apologize, but don't know if they understood. No photo, but it is a site and experience that I will remember quite well without the photo.
the end. We got back to the rental location about 6:30, and my thigh muscles were killing me, especially in the car on the ride back to the hotel. I took some Advil at the hotel and walked around the area a little to stretch them out and by 8:00 they felt OK.
All in all it was a great way to spend an afternoon. We ended up riding a little over 40 miles on the trip and saw a lot of beautiful scenery, tested a lot great local foods, and got some much needed exercise.

2011-03 Arizona
Tuesday was spent lounging around the pool and soaking in the sun. In the evening we went to the Mining Camp restaurant which serves family style meals using metal plates, cups and glasses on large tables and benches.
Wednesday we went to visit LeAnn's sister Yvonne up in Anthem. Ray, LeAnn and Kara golfed with Yvonne and her daughter Jenny, and LeAnn's other sister Sue and her husband John. The course snakes through a neighborhood development, but the houses are far enough off the fairway that you don't feel crowded. From the fairway, there is a buffer of desert between the houses and the course. Lots of deep sand traps, but not much water on the course. It was nice to swing off the real grass rather than the indoor mats we are currently using in Minnesota. While we were gone, we got about 6 more inches of snow in Minnesota, delaying the start of the golf season up north. What grass was starting to show was covered back up.
While we golfed, Hailey and Lois stayed back and played games and enjoyed the sun at Yvonne's. We came back and had a great barbecue dinner before heading back to Apache Junction.
We sat out in the right field lawn area. It is a very casual and fun atmosphere for watching a game, but it is easy to get distracted from the game with all the people watching. LeAnn's sisters and John joined us at the game
Friday morning we went to the Mesa Flea Market. The market has new and used merchandise and is open air, but is covered by a roof with 4 long aisles with vendors on both sides. Each aisles is about 450 yards long, so there are hundreds of vendors, many selling a lot of the same things.

2011-02 Mom's and Grandma's Weekend to Visit Mariah at DU
Mom (Grandma Lois) and Karren (Grandma Karren) joined LeAnn on a trip to visit Mariah at University of Denver. Karren and LeAnn left from Mpls on an early morning flight to Denver and Mom headed out of Phoenix to meet up with us at the Denver Intl. Airport. We rented a car so we could get around the area for the weekend.
On Saturday, we had lunch at Panera on Colorado Blvd., and then headed up to Boulder about an hour north of Denver. Mariah had heard that Celestial Seasonings gives tours; so we headed there where we could also sample many kinds of tea. Since it was Saturday, the production lines were not in operation, but it was still a very interesting tour. They took us to one room that had a garage door that is to remain shut all the time. They store peppermint, spearmint, and mint leaves in this room and when we went into the room our eyes started to water, so we could only spend a few minutes in the room. We ended the tour in the gift shop and purchased several different types of teas to bring home.

Sunday we got up early so we could take Mariah shopping for some incidentals. We had to watch our time as we had to head to the airport by 1:00 pm. Mariah had another good idea for a restaurant for brunch…the 730 South Grill. And then of course we needed dessert – a quick run to Yogurtland before dropping Mariah back off at campus.
